AB 2047 passes both houses: enrolled bill ties printer restrictions to future standards

What happened

The Legislature’s status page now lists AB 2047 as passed and enrolled September 4. The history records Senate passage, 29–10, and Assembly concurrence, 60–18, on August 31. That supersedes the committee-stage status in CA2A’s earlier coverage. No signing or chaptering entry appears in the records checked for this update.

The enrolled text would have DOJ check quarterly for ASTM standards starting no later than July 1, 2027. A finding of applicable, technologically feasible standards would trigger DOJ guidance or regulations within 24 months. Proposed section 3273.633(c) starts the sales provisions: “Commencing one year after the department has published written guidance or regulations”.

What it means for you

Passage and enrollment do not establish an immediate printer-sales restriction. If enacted, implementation would depend on those later steps. The text exempts printers used exclusively for entertainment props and allows further regulatory exceptions. It also ends DOJ’s required standards checks if ASTM has not published standards by July 1, 2029.
