The lead: the federal government is suing over the roster
In late July 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against California challenging two things at once: the AB 1127 restrictions on conversion-vulnerable pistols (the “Glock ban”), and — far more consequentially — the California Handgun Roster itself. The DOJ’s theory is that both violate the Second Amendment by barring purchase of handguns in common use for self-defense.
What makes this different from every prior roster challenge (Boland, Renna, and their predecessors): this isn’t a private gun-rights organization — it’s the federal government as plaintiff, seeking to halt enforcement of both frameworks. Off-roster market prices reacted within days of the filing, with heavy speculation about where private-party-transfer premiums go if the roster falls. Our take: nothing has fallen yet. The roster is fully in effect, and a filed complaint is the start of a multi-year process — price moves right now are sentiment, not law.

Dates below come straight from the DOJ’s recently added handguns list, which we check for every edition of Roster Watch. The most recent batch landed July 2, 2026:

The pattern holds: most “new” roster entries are colorways of already-certified models (the Kel-Tec and Walther batches), which recertify without a fresh round of drop-test and feature requirements. The July 2 batch is more interesting — the Shark Coast Customs SCC Cali 2 and Cali 3 are SIG-platform pistols built specifically to clear California’s requirements, and NAA’s mini-revolvers keep arriving because revolvers are exempt from the microstamping-era feature demands that keep most modern semi-autos off the list. Correction note: the forum first reported the Kel-Tec P15 addition on July 2; the DOJ list dates it June 26.
And the roster search page is… moved
Members trying to verify listings in early August found the DOJ’s certified-handgun search at oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search no longer loading the roster, redirecting into press releases instead. Before anyone reads meaning into it: page reorganizations at oag.ca.gov are routine, and there is no indication this is related to the lawsuit. In the meantime, the recently-added page is still live for new listings, and if you’re mid-purchase your FFL can verify any model through dealer-side DES access.
Why this matters
- Buyers: no change today — roster rules and PPT exemptions apply exactly as before
- Off-roster holders: the resale premium on your pistol is now a bet on this litigation
- The bigger picture: a federal challenge to the roster model lands just as Sacramento considers exporting that model to 3D printers via AB 2047
